Objectives
Work Package 3 (WP3) “Archives Greening” aims to reduce the environmental impact of activities linked to archive holdings. With this aim, we will identify different measures that will contribute to reducing the carbon and environment footprint of each archival institution. We will promote and incorporate sustainable practices and technologies towards the preservation and promotion of archive collections, including resource consumption or waste generation.
The purpose of this work package is to balance documentary heritage with sustainable practices and raise awareness on sustainable development applied to archives through cultural activities that will enable us to engage existing and new audiences.
Work Package 3 (WP3) Archives Greening will contribute to the following objectives of the project:
- Fostering the adoption of more sustainable practices and methodologies by archives, in relation to parameters such as energy efficiency
- To increase cultural access to and participation in culture as well as audience engagement and development both physically and digitally
- To adopt and disseminate more environment-friendly practices as well as to raise awareness on sustainable development through cultural activities
Diagnosis of activities within archival institutions
This activity will analyse the daily consumption and environmental impacts of day to day activities of archival institutions to understand the needs of each institution which will result in the later integration of recommended green initiatives. he creation of an environmental self-assessment tool will be developed with the objective of evaluating each archival institution’s activities and facilitate the adoption of adequate measures.
Proposal for an environmental improvement in archival institutions through the adoption of green practices
This activity will analyse, identify and recommend simple, attainable green initiatives archivists can readily implement, which will provide a practical framework of strategies and resources that will result in affordable, sustainable and socially responsible archival management practices in the profession.
Integration of sustainable environmental practices in the archival institutions
This activity will result in the participating archival institutions adopting measures previously identified for their own organisations within their own governance and policies. The impacts of these measures on environment and society/ staff will be monitored, as well as the economic impacts of their implementation.
Pilot project “Green Merchandising”: eco-designed creative products for archival institution
This activity will result in the creation and launch of sustainable merchandising products which will promote innovative sustainable actions to a wider audience. Each archival institution will co-create green merchandising products with local producers, which will be manufactured using sustainable organic materials and inspired by their archival heritage.
