The Directorate-General for Books, Archives and Libraries (DGLAB) is a central service of the State’s direct administration, endowed with administrative autonomy whose mission is to ensure the coordination of the national archives system and the implementation of an integrated policy for non-school books, libraries and reading. It oversees 18 organisational units geographically distributed throughout the country, including the National Archives of Torre do Tombo, one of Portugal’s oldest institutions.
